The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare – A war film that needed a good screenplay

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is based on true events that occurred during World War II, which are mentioned in a 2015 book written by Damien Lewis. In this film, the Operation Postmaster has been shown in such a artificial manner that you will be forced to wonder how a team of just five people can eliminate Nazi soldiers with great ease. If a little attention had been paid to the screenplay of this film and the seriousness of the war, perhaps it could have been a good war film.

Storyline

The film begins as the World War II, where the Germans are rapidly advancing into Europe and are affecting the supply and support provided to the British Army, due to which the British are becoming weaker. Even America is unable to send its help, and one reason for all this is the German Submarine U-Boats, which is destroying every help that came to the British. In such difficult circumstances, the British Prime Minister decides to impose and together with his advisors, prepares the plan for Operation Postmaster. The objective of Operation Postmaster is to eliminate the supply of Submarine U-boats.

The U-Boats supply came from Duchessa, a ship moored in Fernando Po, a Spanish island. The goal of Operation Postmaster is to destroy the Duchessa, for which Major Gus March-Phillips is selected, who is already in jail due to his fear of violating the order. Operation Postmaster is a covert operation whose information is available only to Prime Minister Churchill and his special people. For this mission, Major Gus March-Phillips forms a team of five people, assisted by two Special Operations personnel who will already be present in Fernando Po.

These two are Marjorie and Heron, Heron is a businessman who runs a hotel business on the island and Marjorie is a gold businessman who has come from New York. After reaching the island, the number of soldiers stationed there seems to be more than necessary which becomes a matter of concern for them. For this Heron has come to ask for help from the Prince, who has a gang of his own and who hates the Germans. Gus and his team reach the island in time but upon reaching there they find that they cannot destroy the Duchessa. Since it is not easy to destroy this Duchessa, Gus and his team decide to steal it. After the success of this operation, this team came to be known as Special Operations Team.

Conclusion

Despite being a good subject, director Guy Ritchie fails to show it properly. Although this is a film based on war, it seems more like a masala film, and there are many reasons to say so. Mainly I respect the sacrifices made by all the soldiers for the country but after watching the entire film you will feel that you are not watching good quality cinema. Throughout the film the Germans are shown as if they have neither learned how to fire guns nor have learned how to attack. The team of only five people moved forward defeating the Germans in such a way that it seemed as if a joke was being played on them. All the actors are playing their roles, Henry Cavill’s look is soothing to the eyes while Alan Ritchson is shown like a beast with no heart and no humanity. It’s fun to see Alan after Jack Reacher and this time he has used his body properly. Eiza Gonzalez’s part is only meant to seduce, although she looks quite sexy and hot in her looks, but as an actor she does not get a chance to show emotions to anyone in the film. Rory Kinnear, who played the role of British Prime Minister Churchill, looks quite good but the character of Winston Churchill i.e. Gary Oldman of Darkest Hour pales in comparison. Ultimately, if there is nothing special left for you to watch then you can spend 2 hours watching this movie, but if you want to see the devastation of war or want to see such a thing that you will be forced to think after watching it then this is not that film.
