Bougainvillea released on SonyLiv for which we should thankful, day by day Malayalam cinema is surprising us all with its creativity. Director Amal Neerad has made such brain-teasing films before, this is one of the best films of all time. Let us see what magic Fahadh Faasil, Jyotirmayi and Kunchacko Boban have created in the film.
Storyline
The story starts off quite tense in which a couple (Royce and Reethu) meets with a fatal car accident. A few years later, the story takes you to Kottayam, where the couple is living with their children, but Reethu is suffering from amnesia whose face makes it difficult for her to remember even for a long time. On the other hand, Royce, who is a doctor by profession, has hired maid Rema to take care of Reethu. Reethu likes to do paintings very much but somehow she always makes paintings of Bougainvillea, it is at the end of the film that you come to know about the secret of this.
Meanwhile, theft also takes place in Royce’s house and for Reethu’s security, Royce has installed CCTV in the entire house, on the other hand, a college student from Kottayam, Chaaya, is reported missing. Reethu feels as if she has seen Chaya somewhere, but due to amnesia she is unable to remember her correctly. ACP David Koshy who is investigating Chaaya’s case, his investigation has reached Reethu because there is footage recorded of him talking to Chaaya in the CCTV camera outside the college. Now only Reethu is able to tell David about Chaaya, but with Amnesia’s face Reethu is unable to even remember anything.
Because of Reethu’s memory issues, David is unable to draw any conclusions from the case investigation and must enlist the assistance of criminologist Meera. Despite her best attempts, Meera is unable to get Reethu to recall her or provide her with any information regarding Chaaya. Reethu begins to suspect Royce as she unexpectedly learns something about him that she doesn’t believe. Among all this, you can also find out about the past of your Royce. It has such amazing revelations which are enough to shock you, telling anything more about the film would be a complete spoiler.
Conclusion
There is no doubt that the performance of all the actors in the film keeps you hooked to the film till the end. But if you are watching this film for Fahadh Faasil, you will be completely disappointed, because his screen time is very less and he has nothing special to do in the story as a police officer. On the other hand, Kunchacko Boban is seen giving a very good performance, as a doctor who remains very calm and also takes care of his wife, but on the other hand, there is another aspect of him which you will get to see in this film. Jyotirmayi is returning to Malayalam cinema after a long time but after watching her performance you will not feel like that at all.
With the director focusing more on character development, the first half of the movie may appear slow and drag you along. It appears like the movie moves at a very slow speed, which makes you bored, but the second half of the movie is much more engaging than the first. You’re captivated to the movie in the second half, and you’re always on edge from the tension of opening one after the other. There is some violence only in the second half of the movie, but it is not depicted in such a brutal way because of the actors’ performances.
