The Deliverance based on tragic events happened with Latoya Ammons, which fails to give you a thrilling experience, the screenplay of this film of Director Lee Daniels and Netflix is a bit weak. In this film, you will see the struggle of an atheist woman with a devil, after which she starts believing in God.
Storyline
This film revolves around Ebony, who has just moved into a new rental home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her three kids and mother. Ebony’s husband is posted somewhere in Iraq, due to which Ebony has to handle the responsibility of her whole family alone. She is also addicted to consume alcohol, due to which the department of child services is also keeping an eye on her. Ebony does not get along well with her mother, Alberta, but she still takes care of all of Alberta’s needs. The reason for this distance between them is Ebony’s childhood which has not been explained in this movie. Due to being alone, Ebony is not able to fulfill all the desires of the family and children and at the same time she also has to get rid of her alcohol addiction.
Suddenly one day Ebony gets a call from her children’s school in which there is a mention of some strange activities of the children. Knowing this, Ebony’s worry increases and she tries to find out the reason behind it, for which she is currently taking the help of medical science. At the same time, Ebony’s youngest child Andre talks to some imaginary person, whom Ebony ignores thinking it is his childishness. After the school incident, the Child Services people also ask Ebony questions, due to which Ebony feels frustrated. On the other hand, along with Andre, the behavior of the other two children also becomes strange.
Then suddenly Ebony meets Bernice, who is a pastor and she already knows about the strange things happening in this house. Bernice tells Ebony about the spirit that is causing all these incidents, and that the spirit is connected to the house as well. Ebony does not trust him in the beginning, but suddenly something happens with Ebony that she starts believing Bernice’s words and decides to leave this house so that she can save her family.
Conclusion
Many movies have already been made on exorcism and they have been quite successful. Director Lee Daniels also tries to do the same with this film but he fails completely in doing so. While watching this film, we actually wait for something to happen that will scare us, but all the scary scenes are seen only in the last 30 minutes. On the other hand, not much details were shared about Ebony’s character due to which the reason for it being like this is not understood, even it is not understood why there is so much bitterness in the relationship between Ebony and her mother.
The house in Pittsburgh where Ebony and her family moved, where all these events are taking place. Bernice tells about the history of this house, but it is not explained why and where it all started. Another weak side of this film which has already been mentioned is its screenplay, which you may find quite slow and boring. At some places in the film you can hear some dialogues related to black and white, but this film very well shows the pain of a single mother who has the responsibility of her children and she has to prove herself right in the society so that she can get the custody of her children.
Finally if you are watching this film with the hope that you will get to see something thrilling in it then you are going to be totally disappointed. There is nothing special like thrilling and scary in this film.
